The robots are going to put us all through the grinder

That is the honest version. The search results now answer the question before anybody reaches your website, and the thing writing the answer has never once needed a water heater at 11pm on a Sunday. Small business loses this fight by default. Here is what actually changed, and what to do about it.

What actually changed

The click used to be the prize. Now the answer is.

Nothing about your business got worse. The path between a person needing you and a person finding you got a new middleman, and that middleman does not care about you yet.

Then

Somebody searched, then visited

  • Ten blue links, and your job was to be one of them
  • Rankings turned into sessions, sessions turned into calls
  • A good page could out-work a bigger budget
  • You could see every visitor in your analytics
Now

Somebody asks, and gets told

  • The answer is assembled above the links, and often nobody scrolls
  • You can gain rankings and lose clicks in the same month
  • Whoever the machine trusts gets named. Everyone else gets summarized
  • Some of your best traffic now arrives with no referrer at all
How we fight it

You do not beat the machine. You get it on your side.

The goal is no longer only to rank. It is to be the source the answer is built from, and to be unmistakably real when it gets there.

Be readable to the machines

Clean crawl paths, correct schema, an llms.txt that hands AI crawlers a map instead of a maze. If it cannot parse you, it cannot cite you.

Answer the question outright

Pages restructured so the answer sits at the top in a liftable form, then earns the click with what a summary cannot carry: price, availability, proof, a phone number that a human picks up.

Say something a model cannot average

Generated content is the average of everything already written. Your actual jobs, your actual photos, your actual opinions about your trade are the one input the machine does not already have.

Own the ground AI does not touch

Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, the map pack. When someone needs help within three miles in the next two hours, a chatbot is not the competition.

Track what is real

Referral traffic from AI assistants is measurable. Made-up "AI visibility scores" are not. We report the first and refuse to sell you the second.

Be a verifiable person

The one thing that cannot be synthesized is somebody who exists, has a history, and puts their name on the work. Which brings us to the next section, awkwardly.

Exhibit A

I am a real person

Google's quality guidelines ask for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust. Most sites answer that with a stock photo and a headshot generated by the same machine we are all worried about. Here is the alternative: photographic evidence of a guy.

E
ExperienceFifteen years actually doing the work, not writing about it
E
ExpertiseTechnical SEO, local search, schema, and AI search, hands on keyboard
A
AuthoritativenessThirty-plus agencies hire me to do this under their own name
T
TrustPublished prices, no invented metrics, and a phone number I answer
Exhibit B

Fifteen years, on paper this time.

Exhibit A was photos. This is the boring part where I actually list what I've done, checked against a LinkedIn profile you're welcome to go read yourself.

Currently

SEO, under contract

  • SEO for Advirtis, a Louisville-based white-label marketing agency — see Partners for how that relationship actually works
  • Unvertise runs alongside it: direct small-business clients, plus SEO delivered quietly for other agencies
  • Based in Louisville, Kentucky
Background

How I got here

  • University of Louisville
  • Ran social media and online reputation for one of the largest dental support organizations in the country — 150+ locations across 8 brands, one centralized model
  • Fifteen years on websites and search, before any of this was a company
What I actually do

Core services

Search engine optimization, web development, UX writing, digital marketing, search engine marketing, content marketing, and data reporting — the same list I've got published publicly, kept honest because it's one click to check.

"Agencies are doing to SEO what Pepsi did to Sierra Mist when they renamed it Starry — same formula, new label, bigger invoice. Call it GEO, call it AEO, it's still schema, content, and citations underneath."

— something I posted about this, more or less

"Nobody wants 200% more clicks anymore. They want the answer. I can still build for that — it's just a different page now."

— also me, also on the internet

None of this is hard to check. Here's my LinkedIn — current role, background, the actual posts these quotes are paraphrased from.

Want a human in your corner for this?

Send me your website. I will tell you what is wrong with it, for free, in plain English, and whether the machines can currently make any sense of it.
