WTF is JavaScript?

What makes the page do stuff.

In plain English

The code for interactive features: menus, sliders, forms, tools.

Why you should care

Content that only appears after JavaScript runs can be hard for Google to see.

Where it goes wrong for SEO

Google can run JavaScript, but it costs it time and it happens on a second pass. Content that only exists after a script runs gets seen later, sometimes much later, and occasionally not at all.

The test that takes ten seconds

View source on the page — not inspect element, view source. If the words you want to rank for aren't in there, Google has to work for them. Inspect element shows the page after scripts run; view source shows what the crawler gets first.

Most small business sites don't have this problem. Sites built as single-page apps almost always do. Related: render-blocking and crawling.
