WTF is Retargeting?

Ads that follow people who already visited.

In plain English

Showing ads to people who've been to your site but didn't call or buy.

Why you should care

Cheap, effective, and a little creepy. Cap how often it shows.

How it actually works

A pixel on your site records that a browser visited. The ad platform then shows that browser your ad elsewhere. Nothing magic, and nothing that knows who they are by name.

Doing it without being creepy

  • Cap the frequency. Four impressions a day is persuasion; forty is harassment.
  • Set an expiry. Somebody who visited 90 days ago has moved on.
  • Exclude converters. Nothing says 'we don't know you' like advertising to a customer who already bought.

For local service businesses it's usually the cheapest paid channel you can run, because the audience is small and already interested.
