Did that click actually become a phone call?

Short answer

Only call tracking can tell you, and most accounts don't have it wired to the keyword. Without it, you're comparing a platform's self-reported conversions to your own gut.

One operations lead asked for weekly reporting that showed clicks per search and whether those clicks became real visits. Their team already listened to every inbound call. They wanted the two halves joined up.

Here's the uncomfortable part: every ad platform grades its own homework, and each one claims the same lead. Paid says it converted. Organic says it converted. Your CRM says you got one call. All three are telling a version of the truth.

What to put in place

  • Call tracking with dynamic number insertion, so the number a visitor sees is tied to how they arrived. This is what connects a keyword to a ringing phone.
  • One source of truth for conversions — usually GA4 with key events defined once, not three platforms each counting their own.
  • Record and listen. The teams that do this already know which keywords produce tyre-kickers. That's content strategy sitting in your call log.
  • Report leads, not sessions. A traffic increase with flat calls is a problem disguised as a win.

The caveat worth knowing

Call tracking done carelessly creates NAP inconsistency — a tracking number showing up in directories while your real number is on the profile is exactly the contradiction that makes Google revert your listing. It's fixable, but it has to be set up with that in mind.

Follow-ups

Is call tracking worth it for a small business?

If the phone is how you get paid, yes. It's usually the cheapest clarity you can buy.

Will it hurt my local SEO?

Not if the real number stays on the profile and in your schema. It hurts when nobody thought about that.
