We spend a fortune on ads. Why can't anyone find us organically?

Short answer

Because ads and organic are different systems. Spend buys you the top of the page today and contributes nothing to whether you're there when you stop paying.

An operator spending roughly $76,000 a month on marketing described their organic visibility as almost impossible to find. Both things were true at once, and they're not in conflict — they're just different machines.

This surprises people, so it's worth stating plainly: Google Ads spend is not a ranking factor. Pausing ads doesn't drop your rankings, and increasing them doesn't lift them. A business can dominate paid and be invisible organically for years, which is exactly what heavy spend lets you ignore.

Why it matters anyway

Organic is the part you own. Ads are rent. The day you cut spend — a slow quarter, a budget freeze, a new CFO — you find out what you actually built. I've watched an account cut paid and lose a fifth of its organic clicks in the same window, because paid had been doing work everyone assumed organic was doing.

Where the invisibility usually comes from

  • Every location page using the same title tag, so none of them rank for their own city
  • Reviews on the site but no review schema, so the stars never show in results
  • Blog posts with no internal links to the service pages that make money
  • A site that has never been crawled on purpose — redirect chains, orphans, a canonical pointing at staging

None of that needs a redesign. All of it shows up in an audit, and most of it is fixable inside a month.

Follow-ups

Does running Google Ads help my SEO?

No, not directly. It helps indirectly — brand searches rise, and those are easy organic wins — but spend is not a ranking factor.

How long until organic replaces ads?

It usually doesn't replace them. It reduces how much you need them, over six to twelve months.
