The reason most regex you find online fails: Search Console uses RE2, which does not support lookaheads. Anything with
(?! or (?= in it will silently return nothing. That's why the non-branded filter here uses "Doesn't match regex" instead of a negative lookahead.What people actually use this for
- Branded vs non-branded split. Build the branded regex, then run it again on "Doesn't match" to get everything else. This is the single most useful filter in the tool.
- Questions. Queries starting with who/what/why/how — the ones AI answers are eating, and the ones worth writing FAQ content for.
- Commercial intent. Price, cost, near me, hire, company. Where the money is.
- Long tail. Five words or more. Usually where an unoptimized site is quietly ranking already.
Careful with a loose brand pattern: on one account mobile ?air swallowed "mobile air conditioner" and moved the brand's average position a full point. Always eyeball the matches before you trust the number — which is what the tester below the regex is for.
